The Botanist

Where: The Octagon (No 25)
Part 46A Milsom Place & 28 Milsom Place
Bath, BA1 1BZ

In Bath with a friend and we went to a restaurant that we have both never been to. We looked at the menu before we booked a table and the food all sounded delicious.

Decor: When you walked into the door, you will walk through this long hallway and on the ceiling there are some hanging plants. Very cute! They then took us upstairs to our table. It’s a circle building so in the middle of the building you have the bar area. Have you ever seen a mini tree in the middle of a restaurant?! Nah me neither but this place had one. There were plenty of plants in there to keep in the theme of the restaurant name, The Botanist.

Food: Now to the best bit, the food! They had a wide selection of food and I wanted to taste all of it. So I ended up getting the Deli Board; you can choose 4 plates of food for the deli board. I had Polenta-coated Camembert, Prosciutto ham, Chorizo stew and the Spicy lamb meatballs. I also ordered the Pork Scratching and a side order of Corn on the Cob; I was hungry!

The pork scratchings were freshly cooked and so so crunchy! It came with chilli jam and chilli salt. The chilli jam was nice but when you also dipped it into the chilli salt it made it even better. Keeping on the theme of the restaurant, the chilli jam were presented in little plant pots; which I thought was really cute!
The best part of my deli board was the Camembert coated with polenta. It was so melt in your mouth and I ate that with the Prosciutto ham, I was in heaven. The Prosciutto wasn’t at all salty and tasted lovely. The chorizo stew had a nice tomato flavour but there wasn’t much spice to it. I wasn’t too keen on the spicy lamb meatballs, they were a little dry; which was a shame!
So I thought the corn on the Cob would have been just half of the corn, but they brought out a whole one! It was still in its husk! I ate it all as I love corn on the Cob, it had a nice sweet flavour to it and it was cooked perfectly.

Staff: The staff were all friendly however they didn’t deliver what they said they were going to do. We ordered a couple of mocktails but the two we wanted we weren’t able to have. So the waiter was going to ask the barman if we were still able to have them; he never came back about that! So we just ordered two other drinks instead.

Overall, I would go back again to try the other food on their menu. Just a little note: when the bill comes it has your food and drink total and then the optional service charge. If you are paying for both, you’ll have to add the total plus the service charge. Otherwise, if you just want to pay just the total you need to let them know as they will just assume you want to pay the service charge!
