What is pork floss?

If or when you go to Asia you may find some dishes will have pork floss or sometimes it’s known as meat floss. It can either be paired with savoury dishes or sweet dishes, so it is rather versatile.

In Cantonese it is called yuk sung, in Mandarin it’s called rou song and written as 肉鬆 (traditional) 肉松 (simplified).

So what is it? Meat floss is basically dried meat and it has the texture of cotton. Think of it as pulled pork but the drier version! The meat is cooked, pulled apart and then in a wok on the heat to dry out. I’ve been looking online and apparently you can cook it yourself, maybe I should give it a try – watch this space!

It might not be to everyone’s taste but it is one to try. You can have it on congee or just have it on plain rice. I had it on a warm sweet bun for breakfast; shop bought lol. It’s not overly sweet and I love the pork floss flavour on top of the sweet bun. The pork floss bun is usually eaten for lunch but I wanted it for breakfast.
