Chinese Crispy Pork Belly

I have been missing the family lately so I made food that made me think of family; Chinese crispy pork belly, also known as siu yuk. “siu” means roast and “yuk” means meat = roast meat! I got the recipe from Marion’s Kitchen, her video recipe is here

It was such a simple recipe and you should already have all the ingredients in your pantry; salt and Chinese 5 spice!

Lovely crispy skin!

It was a success for a first timer making crispy pork belly. The skin was crispy and the meat was still so tender! Chinese people usually dip the meat in hoi sin sauce but I dip mine in white sugar. I was taught this by my dad and in my opinion it’s better than hoi sin sauce, but why don’t you try both and see which one you prefer.

I didn’t just eat pork belly for dinner, I actually made more food to make it into a more family affair (even though it was just me!). We usually have a couple of main dishes and some side dishes, so as I was only cooking for myself I had 2 main dishes and 1 side.

Top left – blackbean tofu and pickled cabbage, top right – kai lan/Chinese broccoli, bottom left – Chinese crispy pork belly, bottom right – plain jasmine rice, middle – white sugar

When you eat as a family, you can pick and choose what you want from the middle and everyone would have their own individual rice bowl. Sometimes there would be soup as well but I didn’t have time to make a soup on top of everything I just made haha. This is what I miss, everyone sat together having dinner and catching up!
